I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Your Excellency's letter No. 3730/1919 of 21st. Mey enclosing a copy of an affidavit made by a Dr. August Gaston regarding his arrest on the high seas by H. M. S. "LAURENTIC while travelling in S. S. "CHINA", and in reply have the honour to enclose the following: -
1. Copy of Admiralty telegram of 18th March relative
to Gaston and his son.
2. Copy of report by the Major Cassel, 3.5.0., on the subject.
March.
3. Copy of my telegram to the Admiralty of 27th
2. The statement made in the affidavit by Dr.
Gaston to the effect that the prisoners were not allowed to collect their small baggage I believe to be quite untrue, for when they arrived on board the "LAURENTIC" their small bags were in the boat with them. These bags were examined at once in the presence of the prisoners and afterwards
handed back to them.
(Sa.)
I have, &c.,
V. G. GURNER,
COMMODORE.
The Officer Administering the Government,
HONGKONG.
